  1. I’m excited…

    June 10, 2011 by Michelle

… This Saturday we are going to the osteopath again for Boo's 3rd appointment.  I can't wait to see what changes are in store for Boo. She has had a remarkable turn around in terms of her language skills and I'm sure even more is to come with this next appointment.

Plus her speech therapy with the speech pathologist is on next Friday so that will be interesting as well.  It was initially going to be a one-on-one but a few more kids are coming to the session which will be good as I can then see how Boo is progressing in comparison.  All the kids are meant to be at the same speech level so I can't wait to see how it all pans out.

She is doing so well – i'm so proud of her! Our little acorn is blossoming into a beautiful tree! :D

  2. Freecycle – get on the bandwagon!

    June 9, 2011 by Michelle

Heart Recycled Record Bowl (Self titled)

    From records and stuff

I am the first to admit that I'm not the best recycler and I definitely put my hand up and admit we throw out a large amount of food, items etc that should have/could have been put to better use. So when I heard about Freecycle from a friend, it was an easy decision to join.  Freecycle is a free Yahoo group where people post items that they no longer want for free. There are undoubtedly similar groups around and the concept makes complete sense but it's one of those things that I never really thought about until it was mentioned! :)

Here is the blurb from their home page:

Welcome! The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,951 groups with 8,510,506 members around the world. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by local volunteers (them's good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on 'Browse Groups' above the search box. Have fun!

So I have joined up and am looking forward to contributing/seeing what is on offer. Not that I need any more stuff because we are about to move houses, but I have seen offers of moving boxes which I may need to keep an eye on!

So join up now – it's a good cause and best of all, it's free! :D

  3. Pouring jug on the cheap

    June 7, 2011 by Michelle

If you have been looking into the Montessori method, you have probably found what I have – and that is Montessori materials can be extremely expensive! I am still to decide whether we cave in buy some of the Montessori materials, but at this stage, I am holding out.  However, I have found that thrift shops/secondhand shops are the best places to find a few starter pieces on the cheap,

Near me is a plethora of thrift stores (says something about the area I'm in!) and I have taken to visiting these to see what little trinkets I can find that is of use. I am also conscious of not getting too much stuff as we are moving soon and the less we need to cart to the new place the better!

Here is an absolute bargain that I picked up this week:

These cost me a grand $2.50!

Now the only problem is that I have become a thrift shop addict! Stop me now! :D

  4. Osteopath Update #2

    June 2, 2011 by Michelle

We were at the Osteopath again on Saturday for our second appointment. I didn't harbour any great hopes for the first session, especially after Anna said that the first sessions it was mainly an assessment and little work was done. This session was just over 1/2 hour, so a lot shorter, but as it was purely working on Boo, I was hoping that we would see results.  And did we? Well, you will have to keep reading :)

Interestingly, as Anna started working on Kaitlyn's jaw area she asked whether she had twisted her neck in anyway. My husband and I both thought about it for a while and it did strike us that Kaitlyn feel down the slide last Sunday (so after the first appointment with Anna).  And the way that she fell was that she twisted her head halfway down the slide and ended up with a bruise and reddness in her cheek. So needless to say, we were both very impressed!

So after about a 1/2 hour session (which thankfully did not last much more as Boo was struggling to keep still at the end), we left the centre and spent a wonderful hour in Fremantle (yay for sunny Perth weather!).

Over the last few days we have been keeping an eagle eye on Boo's progress and I am glad to say that we have noticed a real marked improvement in her speech! (little dance :D ).

Not only is she copying and saying more new words, we have even moved onto a few three word sentences! :) My husband in particular has really noticed it, which is, in itself, a HUGE surprise. So we are completely over the moon and would wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone else that is thinking about going to an osteopath for their child's speech development.

Our next appointment is in another 2 weeks as Anna is going to Melbourne for her PHD so will let you know how that goes! Am super excited and really glad that we did it :)

  5. We’ve started!

    May 31, 2011 by Michelle

Following on from my last post, I took some inspiration from the Montessori books I borrowed and assembled some Montessori 'inspired' activities for Boo. As she has been sick, we hadn't had a chance to venture to the shops to get exactly what we needed, so I made do with what I had in the house.

    We did three activities:

    1. Pouring rice from one container into another

    2. Putting coins into a piggy bank

    3. Matching lids to jars

The first was incredibly messy – we ended up with rice everywhere! But it was a lot of fun and Boo spent ages on this activity and once she mastered it, I changed it up later with introducing a funnel to pour the rice into. After playing with this for a while, Boo then got herself a spoon and started transferring the rice from one container to another with the spoon, causing all sorts of mess but she did well :D I even got her to help clean up afterwards. Here is a picture of this activity:

The tray was a plate from a party that we kept because it was bamboo and we couldn't bear to throw it out and the blue container came with our iron :)

Putting the coins into the piggy bank kept her occupied for a while. She turned it into a counting game, but this activity did not hold her attention as long, though she did spend some time doing it which was a surprise!

The last activity was not so much of a hit – might have something to do with the fact that she was as sick as a dog (but still in good spirits :D ) but it did keep her entertained for a short while.

I can't wait until we move into our new place where there is much more space and I can set up a little area for her with all these activities easily accessible for her.

Have a great week! We are!
