  1. Customising Kateyboo Using WordPress Themes

    June 29, 2009 by Michelle

The great thing about the internet is that there are plenty of freebies out there for people just starting out or for those on a tight budget.

One great freebie are the free WordPress themes. This site, Kateyboo.com, is using one of these free themes taken from www.webdesignlessons.com.  They have a number of variations on this theme so check them out (I’m not an affiliate, just love their work!).

For more themes, either go to: http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ or just type in “free wordpress themes” in Google.  Enjoy searching for your perfect theme to customise your site!

  2. Researching Internet Marketing

    June 28, 2009 by Michelle

I have decided to take the plunge and look into internet marketing.

Type “internet marketing” into Google and you get 47 million hits!  And every page seems to be a new revolutionary internet marketing course/software/coaching program which claims to be better than any other you may have seen.

Each of the “gurus”/product sellers promise the same things:

    • They all claim to have the “product” that will make you rich and able to throw in your job
    • They have all spent thousands of dollars on internet products in the past that have been useless until they “stumbled” across a particular product or developed their own “formula”
    • Many of them were broke, destitute, had only $2.50 left in their bank account (if they even had a bank account – I think one of them apparently had his identity stolen so he couldn’t even open a bank account)
    • Their product is a “must have” product that has made a heap of people rich or even millionaires
    • You will spend the next 50 years wasting your efforts on out-of-date techniques if you don’t buy their product/course
    • There is only a limited number of these products available or they are only opening their doors for a limited period of time
    • They seem to promote each other’s products

Another important recurring theme is their sales letters. And no wonder they are “gurus” in their field. Their sales letters are all incredibly well written and and they make you feel like you NEED to buy their product/course now!

Coming from a basic knowledge of the internet and concepts like niche marketing, pay per click, adsense etc., it does make sense to buy some of these products to leverage off what others have already learnt.  I could spend months trying to learn everything myself, but that would be an inefficient use of my time.  So it’s a matter of trying to work out which product/guru suits and which I trust.  I can’t afford to buy all the products, so I need to be discerning in which ones I buy/trial.

As I trial various products, I will post my honest review of them. Obviously you will need to do your own research but hopefully my comments and thoughts will help.

  3. WordPress.org v WordPress.com

    June 27, 2009 by Michelle

Okay – so I have finally decided to bite the bullet and set up my own site Kateyboo.com rather than have this hosted on WordPress.com’s platform.

I initially took the easy route and established a blog account at WordPress.com, being www.kateyboo.wordpress.com but after researching the difference between WordPress.org versus WordPress.com, I decided to get this site hosted rather than have it on WordPress.com’s platform.

Why? For a variety of reasons:

    1. I can customise the appearance of Kateyboo.com without being restricted with themes and plugins. At some stage, the plan is to have the website redesigned to refresh its appearance.  Using WordPress.com, I would be restricted from doing this.

    2. Even though I can pay $15 per year to have my blog as www.kateyboo.com rather than www.kateyboo.wordpress.com, I am paying about $4 per month at www.justhost.com for unlimited domain hosting and unlimited space so I already had a host that I could use that wasn’t costing me any extra.

    3. Most importantly, at WordPress.com you are unable to display any advertisements. Rather, WordPress.com could display adsense on your site instead!

However, there are plenty of benefits of using WordPress.com for bloggers, especially beginner bloggers.  They are:

    1. It’s free and WordPress.com will host your blog for you!

    2. Simple to use and easy to set up – you can still customise your blog with a variety of themes and plugins.

    3. They provide spam protection, automatic pinging, spell checker, tags and automatic backup.

As a beginner blogger, it is probably worthwhile setting up an account at WordPress.com and then if you are serious about blogging for the long-term, you can move it at a later stage.

I personally, didn’t want the hassel of doing this down the track so have decided to register my domain and have it hosted at www.justhost.com.

I’m not the most technologically literate person, but so far so good!
