  1. Down the rabbit hole…

    March 13, 2011 by Michelle

Continuing on from my love of classic stories is Alice in Wonderland. I don't know if I am having some need to revisit my childhood, but I can't help but be hooked on all the loveliness from the old classics. None of this Dora the Explorer rubbish, I'm going back to true childhood roots/foundations!

And yes, Alice is not your traditional sweet, easy to understand fairy tale. It comes with lots of different messages, all sort of mixed up into one cocktail of craziness!

Here is some of the loveliness I found on the web (to balance out the craziness of the story!).

  2. Little Red Riding Hood Love

    March 9, 2011 by Michelle

I've fallen in love with little red riding hood all over again! I think its the red hood cape that captures my attention. Or the fact that I dressed up as little red riding hood when I was younger, so might be a sense of sentimentality happening.

But whatever it is, little red riding hood is a classic and she will never go out of fashion! In fact, I have seen lots of gorgeous prints and items around that points to her coming back in vogue with a vengence!

  3. The Demise of the Bookstore?

    March 3, 2011 by Michelle

I used to be an avid reader when young. Sci-fi and fantasy were my two favourite genres. And I still read a little today, though not as often as I'd life. So I was sad to hear about the demise of Borders and Angus and Robertson.

Whether its a reflection of where society is heading with electronic gadgets, iphones, ipads etc., I'm not entirely sure. But I do think that the local bookstore still has a place.  But with books becoming so readily available on the internet and, in Australia, so much cheaper overseas then the shops, to survive, I really think that a bookstore has to sell a whole concept.

If you know what book you want, it is simple enough to just hop onto the internet and order it from a site. I myself have done that on many an occassion. My favourite sites being the Book Depositary stores as they are always cheaper and postage to Australia is free. But I still love going into a bookstore that offers more than just books. I'm drawn to those stores that offer an experience – a bit like Alice and going down a rabbit hole. It's a place that can suck you into another world – a world without emails, computers and mobile phones. A place that is quite but yet oozes warmth and knowledge. A place that can make you feel like you are in a place where time stands still. Borders and Angus and Robertson offered lots of range, an ability to see and touch the items before you buy it, but they felt a little devoid of that special magic that you expect from a bookstore. I don't know if that is what caused their demise, or whether it was the convenience of the internet or the state of the economy, but maybe it contributed to it.

If I could design my own bookstore, some of these would definitely be at the top of my list!

What are your thoughts about bookstores – do they still have a future in our society?

  4. All dressed up but nowhere to go?

    March 2, 2011 by Michelle

Having a young baby means that our opportunity to go out anywhere "nice" is severely limited. Especially when you know you will be coming back with food stains on your clothes! But it doesn't stop me from dreaming of being able to dress up and have a night out.

I came across this shop: Spotted Moth which has the most gorgeous dresses.  And the beauty is that their prices are really reasonable. As I'm in Australia, shipping from the US to Oz is often quite expensive, but I have my eye on a few things on their store which I might just treat myself one day and get!

Here are some of their gorgeous dresses:

This is my favourite – the ladybird dress

I love the ruffles on this Curiouser and Curiouser dress

the lace skirt in this Lovely in Lace Dress is just gorgeous!

Those are three of my favourites. Plus they have lots of beautiful accessories and their scarves are just to die for!  See more at Spotted Moth's website.
